January 24 - Joshua 23: 14-16
14 “And
now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts
and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good
things that the Lord your
God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has
failed. 15 But just as all the good things that
the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you,
so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has
destroyed you from off this good land that the Lord your God has given you, 16 if
you transgress the covenant of the Lord your
God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them.
Then the anger of the Lord will
be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land
that he has given to you.”
Joshua is trying to prepare them for his death and the changes
that would be taking place as they are settling in to their new land. He tells the that God has done everything He
has promised. God had taken care of them
and not one single promise God made concerning them had gone unfulfilled. But God also made some promises of what would
happen if they were disobedient and Joshua wanted to be sure they understood
the gravity of those promises as well.
I remember when I was growing up my parents told me their promises
they would keep if humanly possible.
Good or bad, those promises I could count on. If they promised to reward me or punish me, I
knew it would happen. There is security
in knowing promises are always kept. We
have that security with God. Do you keep
your promises you make to others? Why is
it important for you to keep your promises to your work colleagues? To your friends? To your children? To your spouse?
Heavenly Father, thank You for always keeping
Your word. I know that whatever You
promise, You mean, and that gives me comfort.
I know kids are always looking for boundaries and I believe we do the
same. Help me to learn and not have to
suffer consequences over and over because of my stubbornness. Help me see Your truth and not have to
understand why, but just obey. Help me
to be a woman of my word.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
