January 30 - Judges 1:16-21
16 And the
descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people
of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies
in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the
people. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother,
and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to
destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah. 18 Judah
also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory,
and Ekron with its territory. 19 And the Lord was with Judah, and he took
possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants
of the plain because they had chariots of iron. 20 And
Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the
three sons of Anak. 21 But the people of Benjamin
did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites
have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
We see again the people of
Israel live to see God’s promises come to pass.
At times they were obedient and saw the blessings of God and at times
they saw the consequences.
Why do you think God was
so specific with His instructions of running off or killing the prior inhabtants
of the land?
Why do you think so often
the people didn’t obey?
What area of your life do
you struffle to obey?
Is there anything in your
life where you feel God has been harsh on you?
Ask Him today for wisdom to see His truth and follow His lead. He always knows what is best.
Father, there are so many
places in Your Word that I don’t always understand, but I know it isn’t about
me understanding, but about me being obedient.
I must admit I find myself wanting to be able to reason things out
before I follow You, and even as I am asking for understanding, I know
obedience takes precedence over my rationalizing what You have asked me to
do. Help me know and understand Your
will even when I don’t really “understand” Your will. All I have to do is understand WHAT I am
supposed to do, not understand the why.
Help me seek You and Your will, not my own.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
