February 29 – Judges 8:29-35
29 Jerubbaal
the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. 30 Now
Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, for he had many
wives. 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem
also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. 32 And
Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb
of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 As soon
as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the
Baals and made Baal-berith their god. 34 And
the people of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the hand of
all their enemies on every side, 35 and they did
not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return
for all the good that he had done to Israel.
It’s a routine with people
that they forget those who had done so much to protect them. The chosen people of God again put themselves
before their God. How often do we do that?
What promises have you
made to God that you soon forgot? Have you
ever promised God if He would help you with something or protect you that you
would go back to church, or read the Bible more, or whatever else you might
have promised? All God wants is a relationship
with us. He doesn’t want our promises or
certain actions or activities…He wants You and me. We can go to church every single time the
door is open and read the Bible every single day, but if our heart doesn’t
belong to God, what does it matter?
Heavenly Father, how many
people sit in church and read Your word, but don’t know You? They are checking boxes they were told as
children trying to do the right thing, but their heart isn’t in it. We must surrender to You and call You Lord
and Savior. Without knowing You, loving
You, and accepting You, my time sitting in church is merely taking information
in, but it can’t change my heart. You
and You alone can change my heart by helping me see the true meaning of the
words I read.
Help me always be sincere
in my promises to You. Help me keep my
focus on what You want it to be, and not what I think it should be or what the
world tells me to focus on. Be my guide
and protector. Be my direction and my
protection.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
