March 30 – Judges 16:28-31
28 Then
Samson called to the Lord and
said, “O Lord God, please
remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be
avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 And
Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and he leaned
his weight against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the
other. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the
Philistines.” Then he bowed with all his strength, and the house fell upon the
lords and upon all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his
death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then
his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and
buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He
had judged Israel twenty years.
So often we want revenge
on someone who has wronged us, but God is the one who is allowed to take
revenge as He is the Creator and Judge.
In this particular passage we see that Samson asked God to allow him to
be part of the punishment on these people, and God said yes and gave him the
strength.
How often do we ask for
strength to be part of God’s work? I
know I typically ask for strength for more selfish reasons. There is physical strength as Samson asked
for here, and there is emotional strength, and spiritual strength. How often do we rely on the counsel of others
to gain strength rather than ask our Creator who is the only one that can truly
give such a gift.
Heavenly Father, please
give me strength daily to be obedient to You and to do Your work. Give me strength to know You are the one I
should come to for guidance, wisdom, strength, and faith. You are the only one that can truly give me
what I need. When someone hurts me
physically, or emotionally, help me to remember that my fight isn’t with flesh
and bones, but with the spiritual realm that is governed by the enemy. Give me strength against the enemy and please
help me stay focused on You. As we go
through life, we learn so much about people and relationships. I have heard the phrase, “You find out who
your friends are.” But truly we already know.
You are our friend and are always there to support us. Help me remember that and live my life with You
as my best friend.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
