November 3, 2024 2 Samuel 23:13-17
13 And
three of the thirty chief men went down and came about harvest time to David at
the cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped in the
Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at
Bethlehem. 15 And David said longingly,
“Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that
is by the gate!” 16 Then the three mighty men
broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he
would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord 17 and
said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I
drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore
he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.
Here we see David in a cave weary, thirsty and longing for
water from being in the midst of battle with the Philistines who were at
Bethlehem. His three mighty warrior friends heard his plea for water,
risked their lives by breaking camp, secured the water and brought it back to
David. Then he refused it saying, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I
should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of
their lives?”
What? You’re thirsty right? Drink the water; is
probably our first response. But then again, this is David. After
seeing the sacrifice of these men to risk their lives for David, he felt the
overwhelming devotion to God and his men and offered the water to the
Lord. David realized he could not take the devotion of these men for
granted.
These
men saw a need and risk their lives to fulfill the need. Are there people
in your life who have seen your needs and made sacrifices to ensure your needs
were met? Take time to reflect and perhaps thank them for their
love.
How can
you extend love to others in need?
Who can
you pray for, who can you serve, how can you be the hands and feet of
Jesus? I urge you to be proactive as you share God’s
love.
